Green Up Calais: May 4th, 2019

Learn more about what Green Up Day is and why we do it, on the official Green Up Vermont Website!

Calais Green Up Day is seeking a few volunteers to provide baked goods and staff the drop off locations.  Click here to sign up!

Times & Locations:

EXTENDED HOURS! Green up day is this Saturday, May 4th.  Drop off locations in Calais will be open from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at both the Maple Corner Store and at the Calais Depot on Moscow Woods Road.  The town will NOT be picking up any trash on the sides of the road, you are responsible for bringing everything you collect to one of the drop off sites.

In addition to extra bags, gloves, bug spray, hand sanitizer and other supplies, each location will have hot tea and home baked goodies! Don’t forget to pick up your Raffle Tickets for each bag you drop off.

PLEASE TRY TO SORT AS YOU GO!

We get that carrying multiple bags is hard and many items will be really dirty, but we want to try to keep as much of the plastic/glass recycling separate from the trash as possible.

Returnable Bottles & Cans:

There will be 5th grade students and parents at each drop off location collecting returnable bottles and cans. All proceeds benefit the overnight experience at the Boston Museum of Science at the end of 6th grade!

For most of Green Up Day, mixing in home trash is a BIG NO-NO! However, we welcome you to bring returnable bottles and cans from home, as well as what you collect on the roadside.  Thanks in advance from Calais 5th Graders!

Bags & Maps:

Bags are in! By the end of the day Tuesday (4/29) green Green Up Day bags will be available at the Maple Corner Store, Adamant Coop, East Calais Store, and Town Office.  Each location will also have a map where you can highlight the roads you are planning to (or have already) Greened Up.

At each location you’ll also be able to grab a few pairs of rubber gloves and a few other helpful supplies.

Green Up Week:

Unfortunately, the dump where the town hauls all the Green Up Day trash closes early on Saturdays, which means we have to be done greening up by 1:00pm.  That’s why we’re encouraging folks to take full advantage of GREEN UP WEEK!  Bags will be in the three town stores, as well as the Town Office by April 30th. This gives you a full week to take evening strolls or mid-afternoon jaunts, collecting while you go. Perhaps you walk your dog anyway, bring a trash bag with you and start Greening Up Calais early! Remember, while it’s fine to temporarily leave bags roadside, you are responsible for picking them up and bringing them to a drop off location.  The town will NOT be picking up trash from the roadsides.

Teams:

We haven’t figured out a good way to organize this, but we love the idea of green up teams, small groups getting together to commit to certain sections of road.  Not only could this make Green Up Day more fun, but if each team had a truck, team members could leave full bags by the side of the road and the driver could pick them up and deliver to the drop off sites.  If you form a team, let us know how it’s working out for you!
