Root-Up Day

This year, we are adding a new component, Root-Up Day! There is a town Project Advisory Committee which is working with the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks & Recreation on a Resilient Roadside Vegetation Program.  As part of that project, we are working to create a map of roadside vegetation in Calais, including (among many other things) identifying areas where Invasive Species grow on our roadways. By identifying their locations, we can help control their spread. Knowing which Invasive Plants grow where, we can alter our roadside mowing schedule to limit their spreading.

When you pick up your bags, feel free to also pick up a Root Up Day packet.  Each packet will include a cover sheet describing the project and how to participate.  It will also include a map of Calais, on which you can identify any locations in which you spot any of the four invasive plants we are targeting.  Each packet will have an information page about each species, how to identify it, and why it is problematic.

As this day is focused on Identifying WHERE these plants grow, the Rooting Up Day Packets will only include the fact sheet.  You can view that information ahead of time by clicking the links below.

Shrub Honeysuckles: fact sheet, treatment sheet,

Japanese knotweed: fact sheet, treatment sheet

Garlic mustard: fact sheet, treatment sheet

Wild chervil: fact sheet, treatment sheet

When you bring your trash, recycling, and bottles back to the Drop Off Locations we’ll also collect any town maps on which you’ve notated the location of any of the above species.
